The
familiar African proverb, "It takes a village to raise
a child" provides a timeless reminder that children
thrive if their families and the whole of their society
care enough to provide for them. This message, unfortunately,
only retains its power when the family and village remain
as sources of solidarity, culture, knowledge, wisdom, and
morals. But what happens when the village is ravaged by
war, famine, or disease? What is left behind? The answers
to these questions are truths that prompt each of us to
question our understanding of the words of Christ as recorded
by Matthew, When you did it to one of the least of
these, you were doing it to Me.
